History was made at Karimganj College, Assam, as Ruchita Purkayastha was elected the first-ever female General Secretary of the college’s students’ body. Her election marks a significant milestone not only for the institution but also for women’s representation in student leadership in the Barak Valley region.
Ruchita’s victory reflects a growing shift in campus politics, where merit, vision, and leadership skills are increasingly valued over traditional barriers. Known among her peers for her clarity of thought, inclusive approach, and consistent involvement in student activities, she emerged as a popular and credible choice among voters. Her campaign focused on issues close to students’ everyday lives—academic transparency, better communication between students and administration, cultural inclusivity, and improved facilities.
Karimganj College, one of the oldest and most respected educational institutions in southern Assam, has a long legacy of producing intellectuals, social leaders, and public servants. Ruchita’s election adds a new chapter to this legacy, signaling a progressive change in mindset within the campus community. For decades, student leadership roles, especially the post of General Secretary, were dominated by male candidates. Breaking this pattern required not only courage but also widespread student support, which Ruchita successfully earned.
Speaking after her election, Ruchita expressed gratitude to her supporters and emphasized her commitment to working for all students, regardless of gender, background, or political affiliation. She highlighted the importance of teamwork and promised to make the students’ union more accessible and responsive.
Her achievement is being celebrated beyond the college campus as well, inspiring young women across Assam to participate more actively in leadership roles.
Ruchita Purkayastha’s election is more than a personal success itis a powerful statement that campuses are ready for change, equality, and capable leadership.
