Indian Coast Guard celebrates its 50th Raising Day on February 1, 2026. Reflecting on the force’s journey since its inception in 1977 with a fleet of seven ships and two aircraft, the ICG is today fourth-largest Maritime Law Enforcement Agency globally. As on date the force comprises of 206 surface platforms and 77 aircraft. This remarkable growth and rapid expansion have empowered the force to effectively patrol the Maritime zones of India and safeguard 11,098 km of coastline, thus ensuring the nation’s maritime security.
The role of the Indian Coast Guard is multifaceted, beyond traditional security duties. Since inception, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has carried out over 4219 Search and Rescue (SAR) Missions and had successfully rescued 11,806 distressed lives at sea, thereby underscoring the commitment of the force towards maritime safety and security. ICG has also interdicted vessels engaged in smuggling activities and confiscated narcotics/ contraband worth of ₹ 54,413.26 crores, since inception. Additionally, ICG has conducted 495 medical evacuations (MedEvac) from sea and has rendered assistance to 14,708 persons (approx.) during natural disaster such as flood, cyclones etc.
The introduction of new indigenously built ships and advanced amphibious crafts, along with the ongoing modernization of radar systems, highlights the force’s focus on adopting cutting-edge technology and ensuring operational efficiency towards national Maritime Security.Indian Coast Guard’s future vision focusses on fleet expansion, advanced surveillance infrastructure, and strengthened inter-agency coordination. The Indian Coast Guard validates operational preparedness of all stakeholders responsible for coastal security along the coastal states and UTs by conducting joint operations and security exercises every year.
During the year 2025, Coast Guard Region North East has undertaken four Search and Rescue (SAR) missions. Since establishment the region has been involved in saving 1669 precious lives at sea. Additionally, 270 Community Interaction Programs, fostering awareness, environmental protection through water pollution control, and a sense of defense & cooperation among coastal communities have been conducted by units under the Region North East. 3,694 boarding operations, and 3,595 inspections including 34 joint coastal patrols were also undertaken by units deployed at sea towards strengthening maritime law enforcement in the maritime zones of India. The joint patrol with stakeholders has strengthened inter-agency coordination and coastal security within the region. The relentless efforts of ICG against maritime crime has resulted in confiscating and recovering 30.97 tons of smuggled Areca Nuts valued at ₹ 2.18 crore in the year 2025. In addition, ICG apprehended nine (09) Bangladesh Fishing Boats along with 194 crew, reinforcing maritime security. Under ‘Operation Olivia’, sustained efforts by ICG in coordination with stake holders resulted in the protection of over 9.34 lakh Olive Ridley turtles at the Devi River mouth in the year 2024-25.
