After nearly a year under central administration, Yumnam Khemchand Singh has been sworn in as the Chief Minister of Manipur, marking the end of President’s Rule and the return of elected leadership to the northeastern states.
President Droupadi Murmu issued a formal notification on 4 February 2026 revoking President’s Rule, which had been in place since 13 February 2025 following the resignation of then-Chief Minister N Biren Singh amid prolonged ethnic unrest.
Singh, 62, a senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and former state assembly speaker, was elected leader of the party’s legislature group and subsequently chosen to head the new government by the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
The swearing-in ceremony took place at Lok Bhavan in Imphal, where Singh also welcomed his deputies and ministers, signaling a fresh start for governance after a prolonged period of direct central control.
Known for his disciplined approach and acceptance across communities, Singh’s leadership is being framed as a step toward restoring stability, peace, and development in the state.
Political observers say this transition reflects efforts to re-establish democratic norms while addressing deep-rooted tensions, giving hope of a more stable future for residents following years of disruption.
