Vaishnaw Flags Off Sairang-Silchar Train: Boosting Mizoram-Assam Rail Link

In line  with Indian Railways’ vision to strengthen connectivity and passenger-centric infrastructure in the North Eastern Region, Ashwini Vaishnaw, Hon’ble Union Minister of Railways, Information & Broadcasting and Electronics & Information Technology, will flag off a new train service between Sairang – Silchar and inaugurate new passenger facilities at Guwahati Railway Station through video conferencing on 9th February 2026.

The initiative will mark a significant boost to inter-state connectivity while enhancing comfort, convenience and care for passengers.

The event at Sairang Railway Station will be graced by Lalduhoma, Chief Minister of Mizoram, marking another historic milestone in enhancing rail connectivity for Mizoram’s capital region.  Kanad Purkayastha, Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha), Assam, will also join the programme virtually, while senior railway officials and other distinguished dignitaries will be present at Sairang and Guwahati Railway Stations.

The new Sairang – Silchar train service will provide direct, affordable and comfortable rail connectivity to Mizoram’s capital region. It will also improve access to the state’s natural tourist destinations, boosting tourism and allied activities such as hospitality, local trade and guiding services. Since Silchar is a major hub for higher education and medical facilities, this new train service will be highly beneficial for patients and students from Mizoram.

At Guwahati Railway Station, a new passenger facility has been developed in a prime location. It features an air-conditioned lounge, secure sleeping pods with lighting, ventilation and charging points and a dedicated ladies’ powder room. It also offers a restricted multi-cuisine catering service exclusively for paid users, serving as a model of integrated service design aligned with Indian Railways’ vision of world-class station infrastructure and an enhanced passenger experience.

The introduction of new train services and passenger-centric initiatives reflect Northeast Frontier Railway’s commitment to modern infrastructure and enhanced passenger experience, with the potential to set new standards for amenities and services across the Northeast.
