In a historic event, an identified stretch on National Highway near Moran, Dibrugarh district became the first expressway in the North Eastem part of the country to have a dedicated Emergency Landing Facility (ELF).
Operations with all types of aircraft viz. fighter, transport and helicopters were carried out on 14 February 2026 with an aim to assess the highway’s potential as an alternative runway during contingencies
The event, first of its kind in Assam, featured advanced fighter jets like Rafale, Su-30 MKI alongside transport aircraft such as C-130J Super Hercules and AN-32 as well as the Versatile ALH (Advanced Light Helicopter).
The occasion holds profound significance towards National Security. The event was witnessed by the Hon’ble Prime Minister, Governor of Assam, Chief Minister of Assam in addition to senior civil & military dignitaries.
ELF will greatly enhance flexibility of air operations during contingencies and is an invaluable asset during Humanitarian Assistance & Disaster Relief (HADR) operations in far-flung areas.
