In Assam Congress MLA from North Karimganj, Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha officially joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday, March 5, 2026. The event occurred at 8 AM, as confirmed by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, timed ahead of Rajya Sabha elections.
He was inducted alongside MLAs Sashikanta Das and Basanta Das by BJP state president Dilip Saikia, in the presence of Union minister Pabitra Margherita.
After joining the BJP, Purkayastha explained that ideological differences with the Congress led to his decision to switch parties. He accused his former party of practicing “appeasement politics” and said that such an approach was weakening the organization. According to him, if the Congress does not change its ideological direction, it risks becoming politically irrelevant in the future.
Overall, Purkayastha’s decision to join the BJP reflects the continuing realignments in Assam’s political landscape as parties intensify their strategies ahead of the elections.
