In a surprising political move, Pradyut Bordoloi, former Congress MP and senior leader from Assam, has officially joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Bordoloi on March 18, 2026 , known for his extensive experience in Assam’s political landscape, made the announcement at a press event attended by key BJP leaders.
The shift comes amid growing speculation about internal dynamics within the Congress party in the state. Analysts say Bordoloi’s entry into the BJP fold could bolster the party’s presence in Assam and influence voter sentiment ahead of upcoming elections.
Bordoloi, who has served both in the Lok Sabha and in state-level positions, expressed optimism about contributing to Assam’s development through his new party platform. The move is being seen as a significant blow to Congress, highlighting challenges the party faces in retaining its senior leadership.
Political observers note that such defections are increasingly shaping the electoral landscape, and Bordoloi’s decision could set the tone for further realignments in the region.
Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma says, “Sitting MP from Nagaon, Pradyut Bordoloi has joined the BJP…His history with the Congress party goes back to 1975; his joining the BJP will strengthen the BJP. We all welcome him to our party…Assam Pradesh BJP will recommend to the central leadership that he should fight the assembly elections. There is no reason for someone with self-respect to stay with the Congress party…We aim to bring more Congress leaders into the party.” News agency ANI reported it.
