The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has unveiled its first list of 88 candidates for the Assam Legislative Assembly election 2026, with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma set to contest from the Jalukbari constituency in Guwahati. The party will contest 89 out of the total 126 assembly seats, while its allies Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland Peoples Front (BPF) will field candidates in 26 and 11 seats respectively.
Notable Senior Leaders in the Line‑up
Among the prominent names in the list are senior BJP leaders such as Ranjeet Kumar Dass from Bhowanipur, Jayanta Malla Baruah from Nalbari, Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha from Kathigorah, Rajdeep Goala from Udharbond, Pijush Hazarika from Jagiroad, Ritu Baran Sarmah from Barchalla, and Dr. Rajdeep Roy from Silchar. These nominations signal the party’s reliance on established stalwarts and regional heavyweights to anchor its campaign across diverse constituencies in Assam.
Who Missed Out on the Initial List
The first list has, however, excluded some long‑standing party figures, including Atul Bora, Siddhartha Bhattacharjee, and Dipayan Chakraborty, raising speculation about possible ticket adjustments or internal strategy reshuffling as the election dates near. Analysts suggest that the BJP may still release subsequent lists or change candidates closer to the polling day, depending on political calculations and alliance dynamics.
The Assam Assembly election will be held on April 9, 2026, and the results will be declared on May 4, 2026.
