In Hailakandi Constituency, elections come with an unwritten rule no second chances. Since 2001, this constituency has consistently voted out sitting MLAs, making it one of Assam’s most unpredictable and politically dynamic seats.
Politically, this constituency has elected several prominent and influential leaders, including Abdul Matlib Mazumdar, Dipak Bhattacharjee, Chittendra Nath Mazumder, and Abdul Muhib Mazumder.
As the next electoral battle approaches, the spotlight is on two new key contenders of this constituency: Milan Das of the Bharatiya Janata Party and Rahul Roy from the Indian National Congress.
Former MLA of Algapur Constituency Rahul Roy, contesting on behalf of the Indian National Congress. Roy carries a strong political lineage his grandfather Santosh Kumar Roy and father Gautam Roy have both been influential figures in Assam’s political history. Adding to his credentials, Rahul Roy has previously served as an MLA from Algapur, giving him both experience and a legacy advantage in this high-stakes contest.
BJP’s Young Challenger:
This year, the BJP has fielded Dr. Milan Das as one of the youngest candidates in the state’s Assembly election fray. He had also contested from Hailakandi in 2021 as a BJP candidate. At that time, AIUDF candidate Zakir Hussain Laskar defeated him by a margin of nearly 40,000 votes.
Why Hailakandi keeps changing MLAs:
Hailakandi’s electorate is heavily Muslim‑majority, with multiple caste, community, and religious fault lines that parties exploit through shifting alliances and local strongmen.
In this constituency, nothing is guaranteed except the certainty of change.
