The District Day of Kamrup district was celebrated With great enthusiasm and fanfare at Guwahati Biotech Park Hall.
The program was inaugurated by Dr. Mani Sharma, Principal, Saraighat College. He also delivered the welcome speech. The event was attended by eminent historian Dr. Nityananda Gogoi as the chief guest. In his speech Dr. Nityananda Gogoi, , said that Kamrup district has occupied a very important place in the history of Assam. He mentioned that in ancient times Assam was known as “Kamrup” and “Pragjyotishpur” and the name “Pragjyotishpur” is also mentioned in the Ramayana and Mahabharata.He added that Maharaja Priththu defeated Khilji of Bakhtiar and it is mentioned in ‘Tabakt-i-Nasiri’ and its memory is also preserved in “Kanai Borshi Bowa” Inscription. Dr. Gogoi also mentioned the historical importance of the hills of Kamrup district, saying that the Agyathuri Hills,
Ashwaklant Hills and the places with temples in the district bear witness to ancient civilization and religious heritage. These places play an important role in learning history and geography.The event was also attended by Kamrup District Commissioner Dev Kumar Mishra who said that Kamrup district is an important base of history, culture and heritage of Assam. He said Kamrup is one of the seven districts formed during the British rule and has been reorganized over time for administrative convenience.The District Commissioner also said that Kamrup is not just an administrative district, but a region rich in heritage and culture, whose history and identity should be known to the new generation. He urged everyone to study why Kamrup is famous and its historical and cultural importance. He also said that it is the responsibility of all of us to preserve historical sites, cultural resources and heritage and everyone should come forward in this regard according to their ability. The District Commissioner urged all citizens to exercise their right to vote in the upcoming Assam Assembly general elections.The event was attended by Dr. Nabakant Adhikari, Principal, South Kamrup Girls College. He spoke about the history of Kamrup district associated with the freedom movement. He mentioned the inhuman practices like “water prisons” in the Boko region during the British rule, as well as the agitation against grazing tax, land revenue and non-cooperation movement. Dr. Gyanada Nath, former President of Saraighat College Management Committee spoke about the geographical and cultural heritage of Kamrup district. He mentioned the importance of the Kulshi River, the art, architecture and sculptures of Assam, the message of harmony of religious places like Powa Mecca, Hoygriva Madhav Temple, the weaving industry of Shuwalkuchi and the heritage of brass industry of Hajo.
