Our stands at another important political and developmental crossroads, a new generation of citizens is beginning to redefine what governance truly means. Unlike previous eras where expectations were often limited to basic welfare and survival, today’s yong generation envision a state that is efficient, equitable, and forward-looking one that empowers rather than merely provides.
This emerging mindset is not driven by entitlement but by aspiration. Our young population of Assam is no longer satisfied with short-term benefits or fragmented schemes. Instead, they are asking deeper, more structural questions: How can governance create long-term value? How can systems be strengthened so that opportunities reach everyone, not just a select few? And most importantly, how can Assam unlock its true potential while preserving its unique identity?
Moving Beyond Beneficiary Culture-
The strongest sentiments among the younger generation is the need to move beyond a “beneficiary-based” model of governance. The welfare schemes have played a role in addressing immediate needs, overdependence on them risks creating a passive economy. The youth are increasingly vocal about the need for empowerment over dependency. They believe that instead of distributing benefits, the government must focus on building systems that enable individuals to become self-reliant contributors to the economy. True progress, in their view, lies not in how many people receive aid, but in how many people are able to generate income, create jobs, and participate meaningfully in economic growth.
Strengthening Public Transport: The Backbone of Growth-
Efficient public transport is about accessibility, productivity, and inclusivity. For a geographically diverse state like Assam, where connectivity often defines opportunity, strengthening public transport infrastructure is essential. The youth are demanding a transport system that connects rural and urban areas seamlessly, reduces travel time, and ensures affordability. Reliable buses, improved road networks, and integrated transport solutions can dramatically improve access to education, healthcare, and employment. A strong public transport system also has ripple effects: it reduces economic disparity, supports small businesses, and ensures that opportunities are not limited by geography.
Affordable and Accessible Healthcare-
Healthcare remains one of the most critical areas where expectations from the new government are high. The youth are not merely asking for hospitals they are demanding a
system that works. Affordable medical facilities must be available across the state, especially in rural and semi-urban regions. But infrastructure alone is not enough. A recurring concern is the availability of doctors and medical staff. Hospitals without professionals defeat the very purpose of their existence.
The new generation envisions a healthcare system where:
1) Doctors are consistently available
2) Basic and emergency services are reliable
3) Costs are controlled and transparent
4) Preventive healthcare is prioritized
Healthcare, they believe, should not be a privilege but a guaranteed right supported by a robust system.
Education: Beyond Buildings and Infrastructure-
Education is perhaps the most powerful tool for long-term transformation, and theyoung generation of our Assam understand this deeply. However, they are also aware that simply building schools and colleges is not enough. The focus must shift from infrastructure to outcomes. This means ensuring that teachers are present, accountable, and actively engaged in the learning process. It also means creating an environment where students are not just memorizing but understanding, questioning, and applying knowledge.
Another critical aspect is student well-being. Access to healthy food, proper guidance, and mentorship can significantly impact learning outcomes. A nourished and supported student is far more likely to succeed.
Skill-Based Learning and Real-World Exposure-
One of the biggest gaps in the current system is the disconnect between education and employability. The new generation is keenly aware that degrees alone do not guarantee success. There is a growing demand for skill-based education learning that is practical, relevant, and aligned with real-world needs. Students should be exposed to the business ecosystem early on, through internships, industry interactions, and project-based learning.
Engaging students with the real business world can:
1) Build confidence and problem-solving skills
2) Encourage entrepreneurship
3) Reduce the gap between theory and practice
This approach not only prepares individuals for jobs but also inspires them to create opportunities for others.
Rethinking Economic Policies: Beyond Funding
A critical concern among the young generation is the overemphasis on funding as a solution to economic challenges. While financial support is important, it is not a substitute for strong systems. Unchecked distribution of funds can lead to misproportion, inefficiencies, and even corruption. The new generation is advocating for a more balanced approach one that prioritizes accountability, transparency, and long-term impact.
They believe that economic growth should be driven by:
1) Sustainable business ecosystems
2) Efficient infrastructure
3) Market access
4) Skill development
Rather than simply injecting money into the system, the focus should be on ensuring that resources are utilized effectively and equitably.
Keeping Money in Circulation-
A healthy economy depends on the continuous circulation of money. The young generation of Assam understand that stagnation where wealth remains concentrated or inactive can hinder growth. The new government must ensure that economic policies encourage spending, investment, and reinvestment within the state. Supporting local businesses, promoting entrepreneurship, and strengthening supply chains can help keep money moving through different sectors. When money circulates effectively, it creates a multiplier effect generating jobs, boosting incomes, and enhancing overall economic stability.
Reviving Agriculture: Assam’s Core Strength
At the heart of Assam’s identity lies its rich agricultural heritage. However, over time, this sector has faced challenges ranging from declining interest among youth to lack of market access.
The younger population sees agriculture not as a fallback option but as a powerful engine of growth if managed correctly.
There is a strong call to:
1) Encourage the use of agricultural land
2) Support farmers with modern techniques and tools
3) Provide better market linkages
4) Reduce post-harvest losses through storage and logistics
Assam’s fertile land has the potential to produce high-quality, organic, and diverse agricultural products. With the right policies, the state can position itself as a leader in agro-based industries.
Building an Export-Oriented Agro Economy-
In a globalized world facing supply chain disruptions, Assam has a unique opportunity to emerge as an export-rich state. Its natural resources, favorable climate, and traditional farming practices give it a competitive edge.
The youth envision a future where:
1) Local produce reaches international markets
2) Farmers receive fair prices
3) Agro-based industries create employment
4) The state becomes known for quality and sustainability
By focusing on exports, Assam can not only boost its economy but also gain global recognition for its agricultural excellence.
A Vision Rooted in Reality
What makes the new generation’s vision compelling is its grounding in reality. These are not abstract ideas but practical, actionable priorities shaped by lived experiences.
Young people in Assam are not asking for miracles they are asking for systems that work. They want accountability, efficiency, and inclusivity. They want a government that listens, adapts, and delivers.
Conclusion: A Call for Transformational Governance-
The dream of a new Assam is not just about development it is about transformation. It is about shifting from short-term fixes to long-term solutions, from dependency to empowerment, and from isolation to integration.
The new government has an opportunity to align itself with this vision to build a state where infrastructure supports opportunity, where education creates capability, where healthcare ensures dignity, and where agriculture drives prosperity. If these priorities are addressed with sincerity and commitment, Assam can not only meet the expectations of its new generation but also set an example for the rest of the country.
The message from the youth is clear:
Empower us, strengthen the system, and let Assam rise on its own strength.
