Rebel Poet Who Redefined Bengali Literature: Remembering Kazi Nazrul Islam on His 127th Birth Anniversary

Today marks the 127th birth anniversary of Kazi Nazrul Islam, one of the greatest literary icons of Bengali literature, popularly known as the “Bidrohi Kobi” or the Rebel Poet. His writings inspired millions with the spirit of equality, humanity, revolution, and love.

Nazrul became famous for his fearless poems and songs that spoke against British colonial rule, social injustice, religious intolerance, and oppression. His iconic poem “Bidrohi” created a new wave in Bengali poetry with its fiery language and revolutionary spirit.

His contribution to Bengali literature is immense. Nazrul enriched Bengali poetry, music, novels, essays, and journalism with a unique blend of patriotism, spirituality, romance, and rebellion.

He wrote more than 4,000 songs, now known as “Nazrul Geeti,” which remain deeply popular across India and Bangladesh.
