Assam continues to battle one of its worst flood crises of the year, with the death toll rising to 66 after 14 more fatalities were reported in the last 24 hours. According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), more than 7 lakh people across 12 districts remain affected by the devastating floods.
The worst-hit districts include Sivasagar, Charaideo and Jorhat, where thousands of families have been displaced after incessant rainfall and overflowing rivers inundated homes, roads and agricultural land. Nearly 856 villages remain under water, while lakhs of people have taken shelter in relief camps set up by the state administration.
Rescue teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), the Army and local authorities are carrying out evacuation and relief operations. However, floodwaters, damaged roads and disrupted communication continue to hamper relief efforts in several remote areas.
The flood has also caused extensive damage to crops, livestock and public infrastructure, raising concerns over the long-term impact on livelihoods. Authorities have urged residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert and cooperate with evacuation teams as weather conditions remain unpredictable.
The Assam Government has intensified relief and rehabilitation measures, while monitoring river levels round the clock. With thousands of families still stranded and many areas inaccessible, officials warn that the humanitarian challenge remains significant despite ongoing rescue efforts.
Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the death toll from the recent floods has reached 66, with the number of fatalities expected to rise to 75.
