Shillong is once again at a moment when peace, restraint and unity matter more than ever. The city witnessed tension on Wednesday after a bike rally turned violent, with reports of vehicles being torched and statues of Swami Vivekananda and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose being vandalised.
At the same time, Shillong is preparing to host a major sporting occasion. The Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium is scheduled to stage the Durand Cup 2026 semifinal between NorthEast United FC and Mohun Bagan Super Giant on August 20.
This is precisely why Shillong needs to show the country its greatest strength—not confrontation, but its tradition of hospitality, brotherhood and peaceful coexistence.
Shillong has long been celebrated for its unique social and cultural character. People from different communities have lived, studied, worked and built their lives together in the hill city. Football, music, education and culture have created a shared identity that goes beyond community boundaries.
The present situation should not be allowed to damage that legacy. Differences of opinion and legitimate demands can exist in a democracy, but violence, destruction of public property and attacks on symbols of national importance only create fear and division.

As thousands of football supporters gather for the Durand Cup semifinal, Shillong has an opportunity to send a powerful message to the rest of India: football can unite, diversity can coexist, and peace must always prevail.
