Hailakandi District at 43: A Journey Shaped by History, People and Many Voices

Forty-three years is more than a number on the calendar. For Hailakandi, it represents a journey shaped by history, people, culture, politics and the aspirations of generations. Established as a separate district of Assam in 1983, Hailakandi has steadily developed its own identity while remaining deeply connected to the wider Barak Valley.

The district’s story is closely linked with its people. Bengali-speaking communities form an important part of its social and cultural landscape, alongside diverse communities that have contributed to the region’s traditions, economy and public life. Agriculture, small businesses, education, government services and other local economic activities have remained important parts of everyday life.

Hailakandi has also had a notable place in Assam’s political history. Over the decades, leaders from the district have represented different political viewpoints and constituencies. Figures such as Gauri Shankar Roy, Santosh Kumar Roy, Gautam Roy, Shahidul Alom Choudhury, Abdul Muhib Mazumdar,Sujan Uddin Chowdhury and, in more recent times,Zubair Anam Mazumder reflect different phases of the district’s political journey. Their careers and public roles also illustrate how Hailakandi’s political voice has evolved across generations.

At 43, however, Hailakandi’s story is not only about politics. It is also about schools and colleges, markets and villages, roads and public institutions, festivals and cultural traditions, and the aspirations of young people looking towards new opportunities.

The district continues to face challenges, including infrastructure needs, employment opportunities, connectivity and balanced development. At the same time, its people continue to contribute to the social and economic fabric of Assam.

Forty-three years later, Hailakandi remains a district with a distinctive character—shaped by its history, strengthened by its people and enriched by many voices. Its next chapter will depend on how those voices come together to imagine and build a more connected, inclusive and prosperous future.
