Despite claims of success in combating rhino poaching, the incident happens last night under Kohora range at Kaziranga National Park (KNP) where a rhinoceros was killed and horn taken away.
Speaking to the media this morning, KNP Director P Sivakumar said that they received information around 9:00 am today, and were heading to the location.
This is the first incident of 2022, and certainly unfortunate. It is a suspected case of poaching.
The Kaziranga National Park (KNP) is the oldest park in Assam; covers an area of 430 Sq kms along the river Brahmaputra on the North and the Karbi Anglong hills on the South.
It lies partly in Golaghat District and partly in Nagaon District of the Northeastern state. The National Highway 37 passes through the park area and tea estates, hemmed by table-top tea bushes.
According to official records, it had been declared as National Park in 1974, and is inhabited by the world’s largest population of one-horned rhinoceroses, as well as many mammals, including tigers, elephants, panthers and bears, and thousands of birds.
