On the occasion of the Constitution Day of India the Department of History, Dibrugarh University organised a lecture on the theme ‘Bharat: Loktantra ki Janani’ on Saturday. Dr Pallavi Deka Buzarbaruah, Professor, Department of Assamese, Dibrugarh University spoke on the topic “Neo-vaishnavite Bhakti Movement: Reflections of Democratic Ideas and consciousness” where she highlighted the presence of democratic ideas in our traditions since the ancient times of the Upanisadas and how these ideas were incorporated and reflected in the Bhakti traditions of later times including the Neo- vashinavite movement propounded by Sri Sri Sankardeva, the great saint of Assam of medieval times.

She also critically assessed the relevance of these democratic ideals in the institutions such as Srimanta Sankardev Sangha and Satra Mahasabha in the context of present times. The lecture was attended by the students and members from the University fraternity.
Constitution Day (Samvidhana Divasa), also known as “National Law Day” is celebrated in India on November 26 every year to commemorate the adoption of the Constitution of India. On November 26, 1949, the Constituent Assembly of India adopted to the Constitution of India, and it came into effect on 26 January 1950.
