The World Environment Day is observed on 05th of June every year to raise global awareness with a view to initiate positive environmental actions to protect nature with participation of all stakeholders. This year the “World Environment Day” was observed all over N. F. Railway with the theme ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’ with focuses on solutions to plastic items related pollution. To mark this occasion, Shri Chetan Kumar Shrivastava, General Manager of N. F. Railway planted saplings in the lawns of Guwahati Railway Greens, Amingaon in North Guwahati along with other senior officials of Headquarter. A booklet on Environment and Housekeeping Management initiatives was also released by the General Manager on the occasion. Tree plantation along with various other awareness drives were also carried out in all the five divisions of Northeast Frontier Railway with participation of railway officials.
Speaking on the occasion, the General Manager said that N. F. Railway is taking multiple initiatives on all fronts to reduce adverse impact on environment. Northeast Frontier Railway predominantly functions in the ecologically sensitive areas of Northeast region. Accordingly, various initiatives like Conserving Green Belt along the tracks, Afforestation, Water Conservation, Solid Waste Management, Railway Electrification to reduce Carbon Di-oxide emission, Energy Conservation by using LED lights, Initiatives for Renewable Energy, Harnessing Solar Energy, Bio-friendly disposal of effluent discharge from the rolling stock along with various other environment friendly measures were taken by N. F. Railway, the General Manager added.
N. F. Railway aims to be a partner in sustainable development of Northeast India to drive nation’s growth. Indian Railways is the most environmentally friendly sustainable mode of mass transportation. The steps being taken by railways to ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’ will result in maintaining this position in the future too by substantially reducing Carbon Foot Prints.
