Promoting Reading Habits: Inspiring Students at the National Reading Month Event in Bomdila

Celebrating National Reading Month in Bomdila, the District Library organized a special event at Government Middle School, Bomdila, to promote reading habits among students. The main highlight of the event was an awareness program and an essay competition on the theme “Importance of Reading Habits in Students’ Life.”

During the event, Lobom Tamin, the District Library and Information Officer, delivered a thought-provoking lecture on the significance of cultivating reading habits and the numerous benefits they bring to one’s life. He emphasized that in today’s digital age, with the advent of IT and mobile phones, the younger generation is gradually losing interest in reading. While it has become incredibly easy to search and find information within seconds on the internet, it is essential to recognize that not everything available online is accurate or reliable. Mr. Tamin added that the internet can serve as a useful reference tool, but when it comes to in-depth study and comprehensive understanding, there is no substitute for books. He also highlighted that the use of mobile phones is affecting our concentration power, as our brains try to function on various notifications and visuals simultaneously. In the case of books, however, the situation is vice versa.

It is believed that the decline in reading habits among students could be one of the reasons behind the decreasing pass percentage in recent years. Reading not only enhances knowledge and expands vocabulary but also improves critical thinking, creativity, and analytical skills. Moreover, it opens up new worlds, broadens perspectives, and fosters a lifelong love for learning, he stated.

To encourage and recognize the efforts of the participating students, the District Library awarded cash prizes and certificates to the top three winners of the essay competition, along with free library membership of District Library, Bomdila.

Around 100 students participated in the event.
