A fitting tribute was paid by Assam Down Town University’s performing arts program to Dr Birendra Nath Datta, one of the most renowned academicians and performers in the country. He passed away recently after suffering from a long period of illness for a number of years. With the lighting of an auspicious candle, Dr Sagarika Mahanta Das paid floral tribute to the soul of the deceased, and by doing so Nibedita Baishya chanted the Dweepa mantra along with the lighting of the lamp. Aside from that, other faculty members who were present also paid floral tributes to him at the event.
As part of the tribute lecture, Utpal Datta, honorary Dean of the Performing Arts Programme at the University, gave a brief explanation of Dr Datta’s contribution to society as a scholar and a performer. In addition to this, the author also describes the various stages in which Dr Datta’s career as a singer and composer evolved, culminating in the creation of his important chapter on the history of modern Assamese music as a result of his extensive experience in these fields.
As part of the school’s performing arts programme, Khushi Kisan, Yaki and Parthana Hazarika performed a dance and monologue in a fitting tribute to the artist as part of the school’s performing arts programme.
In addition to Pankhi Kashyap facilitating the meeting, Nibedita Baishya delivered a speech of thanks at the end.
