Two-day International Seminar at Pandu College

A two-day International Seminar on Fifty Years of Social Science Research (1974-2024): Assessing the Achievements, Trends and Directions, jointly organized by the Department of Geography, Pandu College and the North East India Council for Social Science Research, is inaugurated today.

The inaugural session of the seminar was attended by Dr. Numal Momin, Deputy Speaker of Assam Legislative Assembly, Prof P.M. Pasha, President NEICSSR, Dr Siddheshwar Sharma, Secretary, NEICSSR; Dr. Shiela Bora, eminent historian and retired professor of Dibrugarh University, Dr Amrit Pal Singh, Dean, faculty of Commerce, Gauhati University, Dr. Sanchay Jyoti Bora, Principal, Pandu College and Dr. Bibhas Chandra Das Purkayastha, President, Governing Body, Pandu College and other dignitaries.

The programme started with the college anthem. After the lighting of the ceremonial lamp, Dr. Sanchay Jyoti Bora, Principal of the college welcomed the gathering and appreciated the zeal of the research scholars who have come from across the country and abroad. The inaugural speech was delivered by Dr. Numal Momin, Deputy Speaker, Assam Legislative Assembly. In his speech , Dr. Momin explained how society could benefit from accurate and relevant research. He also urged the students and the researchers to emphasise on subjects related to society and welfare.

The President of the NEICSSR Prof. Pasha appreciated the cooperation of Pandu College and expressed the hope that the seminar will pave the way for the development of social science studies in the North East through interdisciplinary and inter-institutional academic programmes. Delivering the keynote address, Dr. Sheila Bora presented a picture of the history and development of social science studies in North East India and highlighted the various stages of social science-based research. She mentioned that social science research plays an important role in formulating public policy and raising awareness about social problems.

The inaugural ceremony was concluded with the vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Niranjan Bhattacharya, Organizing Secretary of the seminar and Head, Department of Geography, Pandu College. A total of 140 research papers will be presented in the seminar.
