Om Birla was re-elected as the Speaker of the 18th Lok Sabha on June 26, 2024, defeating K. Suresh of the Congress party.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi moved the motion to elect Birla as Speaker, which was seconded by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.
This was only the third election for the Lok Sabha Speaker after Independence.
The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) led by the BJP has 293 members in the 542-seat Lok Sabha, while the opposition INDIA bloc has 233 members.
With the support of the YSR Congress Party’s 4 MPs, the NDA was fully confident of Birla’s victory.
