The vigilant jawans of BSF South Bengal Frontier foiled a major attempt by Bangladeshi intruders and drove them back to Bangladesh. 15/20 Bangladeshi intruders tried to forcefully infiltrate by attacking the jawans of BSF Border Outpost Kalyani with sharp-edged weapons in the unfenced area of Kolkata, Sector Headquarters under South Bengal Frontier in North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal on the night of 2 July. The brave jawans of Border Outpost- Kalyani, 05 Battalion successfully foiled the infiltration attempt through firing from PAG in self-defense and drove back the Bangladeshi illegal intruders to Bangladesh.
According to the information, on July 2, at about 2240 hrs, the jawans of Border Outpost Kalyani, 05 Battalion, while on duty, noticed some suspicious activities of 15/20 illegal Bangladeshi intruders, who were trying to enter the Indian border from Bangladesh after crossing Baur Lake. The jawans immediately warned the intruders to stop and ran towards them to catch them, but the smugglers did not pay any attention and showing aggressive posture and carrying sharp-edged weapons, forcefully entered the Indian border. Sensing the danger to his life and possible damage to government property, the jawan fired 01 round of PAG, but the round misfired. His fellow jawan also fired one round, but that round also misfired. By then, the intruders surrounded both the jawans and attacked them. Somehow, the jawans saved themselfs and fired 01 more round towards the intruders in his self-defense. After the firing, all the intruders fled towards Bangladesh taking advantage of the thick and tall water hyacinth in Baur Lake.
Apart from this, similar attacks were also made by cattle smugglers at Border Outpost Ranaghat, 68 Battalion and Nunaganj, 08 Battalion in Sector Headquarters Krishnanagar under South Bengal Frontier and Border Outpost Nadirkhana, 70 Battalion in Sector Headquarters Malda and Border Outpost Kalyani, 05 Battalion in Sector Headquarters Kolkata where the jawans in self-defence fired stun grenades, PAGs and other weapons on the Bangladeshi smugglers and foiled the incidents of smuggling and illegal infiltration and also seized 3 cows and a large quantity of narcotics.
After this incident, a meeting was also held with Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB), where strong protest was lodged against the unprovoked lethal attack by Bangladeshi smugglers. A preliminary report has also been lodged in the concerned police station regarding the attack and the firing in defence.
A.K. Arya, DIG, PRO, BSF South Bengal Frontier said, “Such incidents are not uncommon in our line of duty. BSF jawans are performing their duties with exceptional courage and vigilance. In spite of frequent flag meetings with BGB to alert them about frequent attacks and illegal infiltration by Bangladeshi criminals, no concrete action has been taken by them. This inaction has emboldened the smugglers and criminals. Nevertheless, our jawans are resolute in protecting our borders and ensuring the security of our nation under all circumstances.
