BJP calls for 12-hr strike in West Bengal on Wednesday

Clashes erupted in Kolkata during the Nabanna Abhijan rally on August 27, 2024, as protesters demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over the alleged rape and murder of a doctor.

The police used batons, tear gas, and water cannons to disperse crowds attempting to breach barricades, resulting in over 200 arrests.

The BJP has called for a 12-hour general strike on August 28 in protest against police actions, accusing the government of suppressing peaceful demonstrations.

The situation has escalated into a political confrontation between the BJP and the ruling Trinamool Congress.
During the Nabanna Abhijan rally, the BJP’s main demands included:

Resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee due to the alleged rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Medical College.

Polygraph tests for Mamata Banerjee and Police Commissioner Vineet Goel to ascertain the truth regarding the incident.

Unconditional release of detained students who participated in the rally, following police crackdowns.

Clashes were reported at MG Road, Hastings Road and areas near the Princep Ghat alongside Santragachi and Howrah Maidan in which some protesters as well as policemen were injured.
