Headquarters Eastern Command played host to the legendary footballer Sunil Chhetri on 25th August 2024 at Fort William. To reminisce, Sunil, who’s the evergreen face of Indian Football, is an Army kid and started his football career through the Durand Cup. He fondly recalled his days in Fort William as a kid and thanked the Indian Army for having the basics in him which helped him grow in the field of his choosing. It was a memorable day for the children of Fort William who thronged the legend for autographs and selfies. Sunil, who’s in Kolkata to play the Semifinal match on 27 August 2024, took out time from his busy schedule to honour the invite of the Lieutenant General RC Tiwari , GOC – In -C , Eastern Command. While it was nostalgic for the footballer, the event evoked unparalleled pride in the minds of all attendees in seeing the phenomenal growth of one of their own.
Born to Nepalese parents K. B. Chhetri, an officer in the Corps of Electronics and Mechanical Engineers of the Indian Army, and Sushila Chhetri in Secunderabad, India.His father played football for the Indian Army football team while his mother and her twin sister played for the Nepal women’s national team.
Sunil Chhetri plays as a forward for Indian Super League club Bengaluru. He is known for his link-up play, goal scoring abilities, and leadership.He is the fourth-highest international goalscorer,and is also the most-capped player and the all-time top goalscorer of the India national team. He is widely regarded as the greatest Indian football player of all time.
