West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has publicly criticized the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for its handling of the rape and murder case of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. During an event marking the foundation day of her party’s student wing, Banerjee expressed frustration over the investigation’s pace, questioning, “Where is justice?” She emphasized that the state government had aimed to conclude the probe within seven days, but the CBI has yet to make significant progress after 16 days.
CM Mamata Banerjee stated, “We have dedicated this day to the RG Kar doctor. We want justice but BJP today called for a bandh. They don’t want justice, they are only trying to defame Bengal,”.
CM Mamata Banerjee says, “Next week, we will call an Assembly session and pass a Bill within 10 days to ensure capital punishment for rapists. We will send this Bill to the Governor. If he doesn’t pass, we will sit outside Raj Bhavan. This Bill must be passed and he cannot evade accountability this time” news agency ANI reported it.
In response to the ongoing situation, the main opposition party of West Bengal the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has called for a 12-hour bandh (strike) in West Bengal, protesting against police actions during a recent demonstration. Banerjee accused the BJP of politicizing the tragedy for their gain, asserting that their actions detract from the pursuit of justice for the victim.
