FMD Awareness and Vaccination Programme for High Altitude Animals Held at Warjung of Dirang Circle

The ICAR-National Research Centre on Yak, Dirang, conducted an “FMD Awareness cum Vaccination Programme for High Altitude Animals” today in Warjung of Dirang Circle, West Kameng district. The programme was organized in collaboration with the Department of Animal Husbandry, Veterinary & Dairy Development, Government of Arunachal Pradesh, under the project Livestock Health and Disease Control Programme (LHDCP) on Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD).

Dr. Mokhtar Hussain, the Principal Investigator of the project, coordinated the programme under the guidance of Dr. Mihir Sarkar, Director of ICAR-NRC on Yak.

Dr. Hussain briefly outlined the objectives of the programme and explained the nature of FMD, highlighting its severe impact on livestock production. The participants were informed about the epidemiology of FMD and the importance of controlling it through timely vaccination of the animal population. He urged the farmers to collaborate with ICAR-NRCY and the state veterinary department to spread awareness about the disease, emphasize the importance of vaccination, and ensure prompt reporting of any outbreaks.

During the programme, around 40 animals of different age groups were vaccinated, and blood samples were collected for serosurveillance and seromonitoring of the FMD virus. Pregnancy diagnosis of the animals was also conducted.

The event was successfully completed with the active participation of Dr. Pema Thungon, VO, CBF, Warjung, and the staff of ICAR-NRC on Yak, Dirang
