Umden and Mawphlang have been recognized as the Best Tourism Villages from Meghalaya in the 2024 Best Tourism Village Competition, specifically in the Craft and Heritage Categories. This accolade was announced by the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, and reflects the villages’ rich cultural heritage and craftsmanship.
Umden is noted for its association with Eri silk production, while Mawphlang is famous for its sacred groves that embody Khasi traditions and customs. Meghalaya chief minister Conrad K Sangma wrote on X, “Excited to share that Umden and Mawphlang have been chosen as the Best Tourism Villages from Meghalaya in the 2024 Best Tourism Village Competition in the Craft and Heritage Categories by @tourismgoi.

Umden:
Umden is renowned as the “Eri Silk Village of India,” where the indigenous community practices a form of sericulture that is both sustainable and non-lethal to silkworms. This method, known as “ahimsa” sericulture, allows for the production of high-quality Eri silk without harming the silkworms, making it a significant attraction for eco-conscious tourists. The village’s picturesque landscapes, featuring lush green meadows and sprawling Khasi hills, enhance its appeal as a destination for nature lovers and those interested in traditional crafts.
Mawphlang:
Mawphlang’s heritage is distinguished by its deep-rooted cultural practices and natural sanctity, particularly through the Mawphlang Sacred Forest, which is integral to the Khasi tribe’s identity. This sacred grove is not merely a natural reserve but a spiritual site where the local deity, often represented as a serpent or leopard, is believed to protect the community. The Khasi people perform various rituals and sacrifices within the forest, emphasizing their connection to nature and ancestral beliefs.
