West Kameng District is one of the most beautiful regions in Arunachal Pradesh, a destination highly desired by both locals and tourists. Within this district, approximately 50 kilometers from the district headquarters in Bomdila, lies a picturesque valley known as “Chug Valley,” situated under the Dirang Circle.
Chug Valley is renowned for its breathtaking scenic beauty, surrounded by lush green mountains, verdant paddy fields, and a pristine river flowing from the lap of the Himalayas. The valley is rich in tradition and culture, with amazing architecture, delicious local cuisine, and, most notably, its famous Cosmos flowers.
During the months of September and October, the valley reaches new heights of beauty, as it becomes a sea of pink and white Cosmos flowers. This stunning view draws tourists and locals alike, who flock to the valley to enjoy the mesmerizing sights and take photos amid the blooms.
However, in recent years, the number of flowers has been steadily declining. Areas that were once blanketed by Cosmos flowers have begun to shrink, and the meadows are no longer as dense as they used to be.
Local residents attribute this decline to excessive human interference. Visitors often pluck flowers for decoration or bouquets, which disrupts the natural breeding process. Additionally, many visitors engage in activities such as running and playing within the flower meadows, further disturbing the delicate ecosystem.
The responsibility, however, does not rest solely with the visitors. Locals, too, have been observed engaging in activities near the flower meadows instead of protecting and nurturing them. In some cases, newly constructed houses have been built near prime Cosmos meadow locations, hindering the further growth of the flowers.
Chug Valley is filled with beautiful flora and fauna, making it a special place. It’s important for both locals and visitors to work together to take care of this natural beauty. By sharing the responsibility to protect the environment, we can help ensure that future generations enjoy the valley’s unique flora and fauna. Together, we can keep Chug Valley safe and beautiful for everyone.
Chug Valley was recently awarded 2nd Best Tourism Village Award 2024 by the Government of Arunachal Pradesh, while Dammu’s Heritage Dine of Chug Village won the Responsible Tourism Award 2024.
