Suratirtha, one of Guwahati’s premier cultural organisations, held a heartfelt tribute to Dr. Birendra Nath Datta on his first death anniversary.
Dr Datta, known for his immense contributions as a professor, researcher, scholar, author, and musician, was remembered for his remarkable voice and significant role in shaping Assam’s intellectual and cultural landscape. His close association with Suratirtha made the event a fitting homage.
The evening began with a ceremonial lighting of the lamp in front of Dr. Datta’s photograph. The program featured speeches, music, and poetry, with notable cultural figures reflecting on Dr. Datta’s life and legacy. Among those who spoke Mridula Das, Dr. Aparna Buzarbarua, Prof. Bandana Dutta, Rumul Duara, Surjya Goswami, Dr. Tiluttoma Barua, and Utpal Datta. They shared personal memories and highlighted his vast contributions to Assam’s cultural heritage.
A series of musical performances marked the evening, with renowned artists like Bimal Dev Medhi, Pratul Goswami, Dr Sangeeta Das, Dibyajyoti Kakati, Nirupama Barthakur, Tulika Lahkar, Bishnu Kumar, and Anupama Sharma delivering soulful renditions. Dr. Jonali Devi recited a poem by acclaimed poet Nabakanta Baruah, adding a poetic touch to the evening.
After the event, Suratirtha welcomed two new members, Namrata Datta and Anupama Sarma, into the organisation, underscoring the continuity of its mission in promoting cultural and intellectual pursuits. Pratul Goswami anchored the evening, ensuring the smooth flow of the homage-filled proceedings.
