Assam Government initiative Bhasha Gaurav Saptah, a week-long celebration of Assam’s rich linguistic heritage

The Assam Government has launched Bhasha Gaurav Saptah, a week-long celebration honoring the state’s linguistic heritage, coinciding with the recent recognition of Assamese as a classical language.

This status was granted by the Union Cabinet on October 3, 2024, acknowledging Assamese’s rich literary tradition and historical significance, which dates back over 1,500 years.

The initiative aims to foster pride in Assamese and promote its preservation and development within educational frameworks.

The week-long celebrations will be started from November 3, 2024 and will conclude on November 9, 2024.

“The Bhasha Gaurav Week is not solely a celebration of Assamese but also of the 14 other languages spoken in the state. These include Bodo, Bengali, Manipuri, Nepali, Santali, Mishing, Karbi, and Dimasa, among others,” said Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma.

The celebrations will include both online and offline activities, with the release of a special booklet documenting the Assamese language’s historical significance since the 4th century.

What are the key events planned for the Bhasha Gaurav Saptah celebration:

Literary Festivals: Readings, discussions, and workshops with renowned Assamese writers and poets.

Cultural Performances: Showcasing traditional dances like Bihu and Sattriya, along with folk music.

Exhibitions: Displaying ancient manuscripts and artifacts related to the Assamese language.

Seminars: Discussions on the history and future of the Assamese language led by scholars.

School and College Programs: Competitions such as essay writing and debates focused on Assamese literature.
