The Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA), Pune, has selected the Department of Physics at Assam University, Silchar, to host an IUCAA Centre for Astronomy Research and Development (ICARD). This new centre, aimed at advancing astronomical research and education in the Northeast region, will be coordinated by Dr. Himadri Sekhar Das, a distinguished faculty member in the Department of Physics.
IUCAA, a renowned institution dedicated to promoting education and research in astronomy and astrophysics, has been instrumental in a variety of national and international astronomical projects. The establishment of an ICARD at Assam University is part of IUCAA’s broader vision to expand research opportunities and enhance astronomy education across India.
The Assam University ICARD will focus on fostering innovative teaching methods in astronomy, organizing regional educational events, and supporting active public outreach programs. One of the centre’s primary goals is to develop modern, engaging courses and resources for astronomy students. This includes creating updated course structures, experimental methods, and data analysis sessions specifically designed for university-level astronomy education. Additionally, the ICARD will explore distance learning programs tailored for astronomy, encouraging accessible learning opportunities for students in remote locations.
In furthering astronomy education, the centre will also organize workshops, schools, and meetings at Assam University and in neighboring regions, targeting both academic audiences and the general public. These events are intended to provide hands-on learning and engagement opportunities, with topics spanning fundamental astronomy concepts to more advanced research areas. Through these programs, the ICARD seeks to enhance knowledge and skills in astronomy among students and the public alike.
The centre will engage actively in public outreach by hosting community-focused astronomy programs, which are expected to inspire and educate local communities about the universe. Serving as a regional hub, the ICARD will also welcome visiting astronomers and scholars, enabling collaborative research and knowledge-sharing within the local astronomy community and beyond.
Vice Chancellor of Assam University, Prof. Rajive Mohan Panth, expressed his excitement upon hearing the news. He stated that the centre will bring a new dimension to astronomy research in this region. According to Prof. Panth, the centre will offer students from Northeast India and beyond the opportunity to interact with eminent researchers and scientists, allowing them to collaborate on projects and pursue careers in astronomy and astrophysics.
The new IUCAA Centre at Assam University, Silchar, marks a significant milestone in the development of astronomical research in Northeast India. This initiative is expected to inspire a new generation of students, educators, and astronomy enthusiasts, enriching scientific knowledge and fostering a vibrant community around the study of the universe.
