Assam Cabinet renamed Karimganj district as Sribhumi

The Cabinet of Assam on November 19, 2024 decided Karimganj district which is called one of the major district of Assam has been officially renamed Sribhumi, a decision announced by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on November 19, 2024.

This new name resonates with local identity and spiritual significance, aligning with the aspirations of the community to restore historical recognition.

This change honors Rabindranath Tagore, who referred to the area as “Sribhumi” (land of Goddess Lakshmi) over a century ago.

On a post on X, Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote,” Over a 100 years ago, Kabiguru Rabindranath Tagore had described modern day Karimganj District in Assam as ‘Sribhumi’- the land of Maa Lakshmi. Today the #Assam cabinet has fulfilled this long standing demand of our people.”

The government plans to continue renaming places lacking historical context or dictionary references.

Historically this district was a part of the Sylhet District before India’s Partition and became a district in 1983.

The local population responded positively to the renaming of Karimganj to Sribhumi, viewing it as a significant acknowledgment of their cultural heritage. MLA of Patharkandi Krishnendu Paul expressed gratitude, stating that the new name honors the region’s rich traditions and instills pride among its residents.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma emphasized that the decision reflects the aspirations of the people and restores historical significance, fulfilling a long-standing demand for a name that resonates with their identity and heritage.
