In a significant move the All Tripura Hotel and Restaurant Owners’ Association (ATHROA) has announced a ban on Bangladeshi citizens from staying in hotels or dining in restaurants across Tripura, effective December 2. This decision comes in response to escalating tensions following recent attacks on Hindu minorities in Bangladesh and the desecration of the Indian flag.
ATHROA general secretary Saikat Bandyopadhyay stated that the decision was made during an emergency meeting, emphasizing that the move is a reaction to the “insult” faced by the Indian flag and the ongoing oppression of minorities in Bangladesh. “We are a secular country and have respect for all religions. However, the prevailing situation in Bangladesh is really worrisome,” he remarked.
In addition to hotels and restaurants, ILS Hospital in Tripura has also declared it will not treat patients from Bangladesh as a form of protest against reported atrocities on minorities in the neighboring country. This growing sentiment reflects a broader concern among Tripura’s residents regarding safety and respect for national symbols amid rising communal tensions in Bangladesh.
