The Indian Army’s Eastern Command yesterday conducted the Curtain Raiser event for Vijay Diwas 2024 at the Fort William, Kolkata. This solemn occasion marked the beginning of celebrations to honour India’s historic victory in the 1971 War and to pay tribute to the valour of the Indian Armed Forces.
Maj Gen Mohit Seth,MGGS, Headquarters Eastern Command, addressed the media during the event, reflecting on the monumental legacy of the 1971 War. In his speech, Maj Gen Seth highlighted the unparalleled bravery and sacrifices of the Indian Armed Forces, emphasizing the significance of this historic victory in shaping India’s modern military history.
A highlight of the event was the presence of Mr. Manash Ghosh, a Veteran Senior War Journalist and former Editor of the Bengali Statesman captivated the audience with his firsthand accounts from the battlefield, recounting tales of courage, resilience and sacrifice that defined the 1971 War. His reflections brought to life the enduring spirit of the soldiers and the resilience of the nation during those crucial times.
The Curtain Raiser also underscored the sacrifices of the Bravehearts and their families, whose unwavering dedication and commitment led to India’s decisive victory. The event set the tone for the upcoming Vijay Diwas celebrations, which will include a series of activities to honour the indomitable spirit of the 1971 War heroes.
The success in 1971 Bangladesh Liberation war, however, came at a price for India — nearly 3,900 Indian soldiers were killed and nearly 10,000 others injured, with many left to suffer from life-long disabilities.
In short, Bangladesh should never forget the contribution of the Indian Armed Forces in their Liberation war but for which they couldn’t have achieved their freedom.
