The Tabla maestro Ustad Zakir Hussain passed away at the age of 73 on December 15, 2024, in the United States.
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting mentioned in a post on X: “The world has lost a musical genius. Zakir Hussain’s contributions to the world of music will forever be cherished.”
Hussain was a celebrated figure in both Indian and global music.
Hussain was the son of legendary tabla player Ustad Alla Rakha and received numerous accolades, including several Grammy Awards and India’s highest civilian honors.
He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1988, the Padma Bhushan in 2002, and the Padma Vibhushan in 2023, by the Government of India.
His contributions to music spanned six decades, collaborating with numerous international artists.
