Arson Attack on Christian Community in Bangladesh Leaves Families Homeless

On Christmas Eve, a tragic incident unfolded in the Bandarban district of southeastern Bangladesh, where at least 17 houses belonging to the Christian Tripura community were set ablaze. The arson attack occurred around midnight while residents were away attending Christmas services in a nearby village, leaving them homeless and devastated.

 Details of the Incident

The fire engulfed nearly all the homes in the newly established Tongjhiri Tripura Para, a settlement that had been rebuilt by the community after they faced displacement several years ago. Eyewitnesses reported that 17 out of 19 houses were completely destroyed, with only two houses sustaining partial damage. The victims returned to find their homes reduced to ashes, with little to salvage from the ruins.

Gungamani Tripura, one of the affected residents, expressed his anguish, stating, “Our houses have been completely burned to ashes. We could not save anything. Today is supposed to be our happiest day, but this has turned into a nightmare.”

 Background and Community History

The Tripura community has a long and painful history of displacement. According to community leaders, they had lived in the area for generations but were forcibly evicted four to five years ago by individuals claiming to represent local authorities. The land was reportedly leased to the wife of a high-ranking police officer during the Awami League regime. Following the fall of that government, the community returned and rebuilt their homes, only to face this latest tragedy.

Paisapru Tripura, the head of the community, highlighted their struggles and called for justice: “We demand exemplary punishment for the criminals,” he said.

 Government Response and Investigation

Local authorities have acknowledged the incident. The interim government in Dhaka has condemned the attack and initiated an investigation. Four individuals have been arrested in connection with the arson, and police are looking into claims that internal rivalries within the Christian community may have contributed to the violence.

Md Idris, chairman of Sarai Union Parishad, confirmed that 17 houses were destroyed and emphasized that law enforcement is working diligently to uncover the motives behind this attack. The police have been directed to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure justice for the victims.

 Community Reactions

The attack has drawn widespread condemnation from various religious leaders. Archbishop Bejoy D’Cruze of Dhaka expressed strong disapproval of these acts against vulnerable indigenous Christians and called for immediate protection and compensation for those affected. Similarly, Archbishop Lawrence Subrata Howlader of Chittagong condemned the violence and highlighted the broader issue of land disputes affecting marginalized communities in Bangladesh.

Hemanta Corraya, general secretary of the Bangladesh Christian Association, urged authorities to provide adequate relief materials and ensure safety for affected communities to prevent future incidents.

 Conclusion

This Christmas Eve tragedy has not only left many families homeless but has also raised serious concerns about the safety and rights of religious minorities in Bangladesh. As investigations continue, there is a pressing need for justice and support for those who have suffered during what should have been a time of celebration and joy.
