At least 85 people (46 women and 39 men died ) following a plane crash in South Korea at Muan International Airport on December 29, 2024. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800 operated by Jeju Air, was carrying 181 individuals, including 175 passengers and six crew members, on a flight from Bangkok to Muan when it veered off the runway during landing and crashed into a wall, subsequently bursting into flames.
The crash occurred early Sunday morning at Muan International Airport, located in the southwestern region of South Korea.
Initial reports indicated at least 29 fatalities, but this number has since risen to 62 as rescue operations continue. Two survivors have been reported.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the aircraft may have experienced a landing gear malfunction, which could have led to the plane attempting a belly landing before it crashed. Eyewitness videos captured the moment the plane skidded off the runway, creating a large fireball.
Emergency services are actively engaged in rescue efforts, with firefighters working to extinguish flames and recover victims from the wreckage. The situation is still developing, and further updates are expected as authorities continue their investigations into the cause of this tragic event.
It’s one of the deadliest disasters in South Korea’s aviation history. The last time South Korea suffered a large-scale air disaster was in 1997.
In 1997, a Korean Airlines plane crashed in Guam killing 228 passengers.
