The DGAR Men and Women Polo Tournament commenced at the historic Mapal Kangjeibung, on 20 Jan 2025. The event is being organised by Assam Rifles as part of its Civic Action Program (CAP) in coordination with the All Manipur Polo Association (AMPA).
The IGAR (South) graced this occasion as Chief Guest, along with distinguished guests Lt Gen (Dr) Konsam Himalay Singh, PVSM,UYSM, AVSM, YSM (Retd.) and Dr Konsam Saratchandra Singh, President, All Manipur Polo Association. During this event, the IG emphasized on need for players to put in their best and strive to improve their talent. He highlighted the rich sporting heritage of Manipur and it’s historic association with Polo. He exhorted upon the Teams to preserve this unique legacy of Manipur.
A total of 32 Teams are participating in the Tournament, of which 27 are men’s teams and five are women’s teams. Matches will be played upto 08 February 25. Three Teams from the Assam Rifles will be participating in this event, including the AR Women Polo Team which was launched on 07 May last year. The conduct of this Tournament and participation of the various teams epitomises the commitment of Assam Rifles towards promotion of local sports and culture.
The Opening Ceremony drew approx 2000 spectators, including students from Sainik School Imphal and Cadets of the NCC. The Assam Rifles Pipe Band mesmerized the audience with a spectacular performance, adding grandeur to the event. The event marks the recommencement of major Polo Tournaments in the State after a gap of four years, which had stopped since 2020 because of COVID-19 and ethnic clashes.
With an exciting line-up of matches ahead, the DGAR Polo Championship 2025 promises to be a thrilling showcase of skill and sportsmanship, reinforcing Assam Rifles’ commitment to preserving Manipur’s rich polo heritage and nurturing the next generation of players.
The conduct of DGAR Polo Tournament is testimony of Assam Rifle’s commitment towards peace in the State by promotion of sports and fruitful engagement of the youth.
