Indian Railways is relentless pursuing “Hungry for Cargo” policy to enhance Goods transportation from the current upto 45%. To achieve this steep target, Business Development Units are set up in Zonal & Divisional levels, which in turn has helped capturing new streams of goods like salt, sand, stone, agricultural products etc. The National Transporter is also focusing on commodities like coal, cement, iron ore etc. where Railways hold a bulk market share.
As a part of that endeavour, Sealdah Division is accelerating “Hungry For Cargo” mission, making significant strides in enhancing freight loading capacity and improving customer service. In a major development in this direction, a new goods shed has been commissioned at Murshidabad today by Shri Deepak Nigam, DRM/Sealdah, which is designed to bolster logistics and trade in the region.
The newly operational Murshidabad Goods Shed represents a substantial investment in infrastructure, strategically positioned to meet the increasing demand for commodity transport. This ultra modern facility will handle a variety of goods, including cement, fertilizers, food grains etc., offering businesses a more viable and reliable shipping option. Critically, the new goods shed will alleviate pressure on the existing Cossimbazar Goods Shed, streamlining operations and significantly reducing transit times for customers.
Today, DRM/Sealdah alongwith senior Divisional officials met with local businessmen and traders to promote the new facility and discuss its benefits. This outreach effort is aimed at catering a larger customer base and stimulate economic growth in the Murshidabad area.
In order to facilitate local merchants to utilize the Murshidabad Goods Shed, Sealdah Division has announced a special offer. Terminal charges, normally Rs. 20 per ton, will be completely waived for the first year of operation. This significant incentive is expected to encourage greater participation from local businessmen and drive economic activity within the region by promoting Rail Freight more accessible and efficient.
