On 28 February 2025, Assam Rifles, in a solemn ceremony, paid homage to the legendary figure of North East India, Major Bob Khathing on the occasion of his 113th birth anniversary. The event took place at Valley View Mantripukhri in Manipur and was graced by several dignitaries, both military and civil, including Mr. John Khathing, the son of Major Bob Khathing, Alfred Kan-Ngam Arthur, Member of Parliament, Lok Sabha from Outer Manipur and Inspector General Assam Rifles (South).
Major Bob Khathing, a recipient of the Padmashree, Military Cross (MC), and Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE), remains one of the most iconic and respected figures in the history of North East India. His heroic contributions during World War II, particularly with the renowned “Victor Force,” earned him the Military Cross and MBE for his gallantry.
In addition to his remarkable wartime service, Major Khathing played pivotal roles in the post-independence era, significantly contributing to the development and peace of the North East. He was a key figure during the transitional period in the states of Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, and Sikkim. Notably, he served as the Assistant Political Officer in the erstwhile North East Frontier Agency and was the first officer to successfully unfurl the Indian Tri-color at Tawang in 1951. For his exceptional services to the region, he was honoured with the Padmashree by the first President of India, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, in 1957.
The Inspector General of Assam Rifles (South), in his speech emphasized the enduring impact of Major Bob Khathing’s legacy on the peace, security, and development of North East India. He expressed gratitude to the Khathing family for attending the event and reiterated the importance of remembering and honouring those who contributed to shaping the vibrant and growing North East.
The ceremony also featured a felicitation program where the Khathing family honored exceptional students from the region. A total of five students, who had excelled in the Class X and XII board examinations in various streams, were recognized for their academic achievements. Each recipient was awarded a cash prize along with a certificate for their outstanding performance.
The ceremony was a fitting tribute to the life and legacy of Major Bob Khathing, celebrating his immense contributions to the North East and inspiring future generations to continue his work for the region’s peace, prosperity, and development.
