India Dispatches Humanitarian Aid to Earthquake-Stricken Myanmar Under ‘Operation Brahma’

In response to the devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck Myanmar on March 28, 2025, India has initiated ‘Operation Brahma’ to provide urgent humanitarian assistance to its neighbor. The first tranche of aid, comprising approximately 15 tonnes of relief materials, arrived at Yangon’s Mingaladon Airport today via an Indian Air Force C-130J aircraft. The consignment includes tents, blankets, sleeping bags, food packets, hygiene kits, generators, and essential medicines.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep condolences for the loss of lives and reiterated India’s commitment to supporting Myanmar during this challenging time. He stated, “Spoke with Senior General H.E. Min Aung Hlaing of Myanmar. Conveyed our deep condolences at the loss of lives in the devastating earthquake. As a close friend and neighbor, India stands in solidarity with the people of Myanmar in this difficult hour. Disaster relief material, humanitarian assistance, search & rescue teams are being expeditiously dispatched to the affected areas as part of #OperationBrahma.”

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also emphasized India’s prompt response, noting, “India dispatches first tranche of urgent humanitarian aid for the people of Myanmar. @IAF_MCC C-130 is carrying blankets, tarpaulins, hygiene kits, sleeping bags, solar lamps, food packets, and kitchen sets.”

The earthquake has resulted in a death toll surpassing 1,000, with thousands injured and significant infrastructure damage reported. India’s swift assistance underscores its role as a first responder in regional crises and highlights the enduring ties between the two nations. Additional relief efforts are underway, with more consignments expected to follow as part of ‘Operation Brahma.’

The international community continues to mobilize support for Myanmar, with various countries and organizations contributing to relief and recovery operations in the aftermath of this catastrophic event.
