A Scientific and Environmental Research Organization Voice of Environment and the Department of Chemistry, Karimganj College jointly conducted a workshop session broad theme based on “Solid Waste Management and Circular Economy Prospective.”
This learning session is part of its ongoing initiative on environmental education and awareness missions among the students, youths, and community. The session was conducted offline and online as students and faculty members assembled at the Conference Hall of College premises and others joined via online mode (Hybrid Mode).
Eminent Scientist and Gandhian Young Technological Innovation Awardee, Dr. Satya Sundar Bhattacharya is an Associate Professor leading the Soil and Agro Bioengineering Laboratory of the Department of Environmental Science at Tezpur University, Tezpur Assam as a guest speaker.
At the outset, Dr. Arijita Paul, Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry Karimganj College, welcomes Dr Satya Sundar Bhattacharjee in front of the August gathering. Dr Bhattacharjee delivered the lecture on “Solid Waste Conversion for Healthy Soil-Crop Management: A Circular Economy Approach.” Dr Bhattacharya mainly highlighted plastic waste and their management. In his deliberation, he discussed segregating wastes into biodegradable and bio-non-biodegradable types. He detailed the management of solid wastes, which are currently one of the burning issues. He tried to relate soil health with solid wastes. In this deliberation, he presented an alarming database on soil and soil series destruction in India and abroad. He also included the effect of urbanization on the production of solid wastes and poor management of waste, even in a city like Delhi. Dr. Bhattacharjee was able to present the research work that is going on at Tezpur University under his supervision very nicely. He described the different processes of preparing vermicompost using earth warms and the efficiency of earth warming in removing unwanted metals from soil.
The target group of the lecture is undergraduate students. Young researchers from different institutions/universities in other states also joined and interacted with Guest speakers during the questioning session. In the end, Saurav Narayan, a Research Scholar from the Central University of Punjab, Bathinda, India, asked a question on Hazardous waste. Similarly, another research scholar, Rakesh Choudhary, from the National Institute of Technology Delhi, also invited a guest speaker about waste management disposal and the circular economy. In interactive sessions, a few students from the Chemistry Department, Karimganj College, and other participants from other institutions raised their queries. They participated nicely from team Voice of Environment, Researcher and Environmentalist Moharana Choudhury, and other esteemed members were present in the session. The session ended with a Vote of thanks offered by Dr Biswajit Deb, Assistant Professor of the Department of Chemistry at Karimganj College, and Moharana Choudhury from the Voice of Environment team thanked guest speaker Dr Satya Sundar Bhattacharjee, Principal Dr Ramanuj Chakaraborty, HOD Department of Chemistry, Karimganj College Dr. Dibakar Deb, all students, participants around the country and Dr Sumita Paul Purkayastha, Associate Professor, Department of Chemistry, Karimganj College the key initiator and coordinating and making this workshop a successful one.
