Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang has announced several infrastructure projects aimed at addressing the traffic congestion problem in Gangtok.

During his address at the finals of the 23rd Chief Minister’s Compound Archery Gold Cup held at Karthok Archery Field in Pakyong district, the Chief Minister announced the construction of a cable car from Namli to Ranipool and from Ranipool to the STNM Hospital premises. He stated that he had already discussed the project with Union Power Minister Manoharlal Khattar during his recent visit to Sikkim.

The Chief Minister also announced the construction of a new taxi stand in Ranipool for South-West taxis. He informed that an alternative highway will be constructed via Syari. After completion, South-West taxis will use the Syari road instead of the main highway of Gangtok. He further announced the construction of a bus stand in Ranipool.

Highlighting the reasons behind the increasing traffic congestion, the Chief Minister mentioned that around 300 new vehicles are registered every month in Sikkim. He also pointed out that approximately 30,000 government employees have been regularised recently, and many of them are likely to purchase vehicles, which will further add to the traffic load in the coming days.
