Hav Mering Ao, born on November 15, 1920, is a distinguished veteran of the Assam Rifles and is celebrated as the oldest gallantry award recipient in the force’s history.He served in the 3rd Battalion of the Assam Rifles and is a veteran of World War II, having participated in significant battles such as those in Kohima and Burma.
In 1960, during operations in Nagaland, Havildar Mering Ao exhibited exceptional bravery by engaging insurgents, resulting in the elimination of one and injury to two others. For this act of valor, he was awarded the Ashok Chakra Class III, which was later renamed the Shaurya Chakra, by then-President Dr. Rajendra Prasad on April 21, 1960.
At the age of 105, Havildar Mering Ao resides in Sungratsu village, Mokokchung district, Nagaland. Recognizing his contributions, Gen PC Nair former DG AR also visited him in 2023, and Assam Rifles has been frequently been in touch with him to enquire about his and his families wellbeing.
Havildar Mering Ao’s life and service continue to inspire many, symbolizing the enduring spirit and dedication of the Assam Rifles.
