Professor Satya Sundar Bhattacharya of the Department of Environmental Science at Tezpur University, Tezpur, Assam, has been elected as a fellow of the prestigious Indian National Science Academy (INSA), considered the apex academy of science in India for the year 2025.
This fellowship will be effective from January 2026. There are only two fellows from North Eastern India who have been elected for this prestigious achievement in the field of scientific and research contributions. Professor Satya Sundar Bhattacharya is a leading scientist of the Soil and Agro Bioengineering Laboratory, Department of Environmental Science at Tezpur University.
His research area interests are waste management, soil health restoration, plant medicinal compounds and their bioactivity under changing environmental conditions, nano-fertiliser development, earthworm biology, and their gut microbiology, to name a few. So far, he has successfully guided more than seven Ph.D. students
to secure a Ph.D. There are more than 90 research articles to his credit, of which 75 are in journals of repute with high-impact factors. An Indian patent on 'novel soil conditioners' was granted in 2020, and the technology has recently been transferred through licensing.
The Indian National Science Academy (INSA) is India's premier national academy of sciences, established in 1935 to promote and safeguard science in India, represent the scientific community, and advise the government on national scientific issues. It serves as an autonomous body under the Department of Science and Technology (DST) Government of India, fostering collaboration between scientists and institutions, recognising scientific excellence through its prestigious fellowship, and publishing scientific journals and statements. INSA plays a crucial role in nurturing scientific talent through awards and programs for both young and senior scientists and acts as India's voice in international scientific forums.
