Assam Floods: Barak and Kushiyara River now flowing above danger level, people affected

Assam is reeling under floods. Barak Valley has been severely hit. The three districts of Cachar, Hailakandi and Karimganj is under water, following continuous rainfall over the weeks. The sufferings of people are absolutely unexpected and unfortunate.

Das Colony, National Highway, etc. are under water. There are several areas where people are facing drinking water crisis as well. It is a situation of concern now, out of this natural disaster. Relief and rescue efforts are on.

“The PHE deptt of Silchar deployed to supply water for the city has been doing relentless work for the last week even at the cost of not going to their flood effected homes”, reads a tweet by Silchar MP Rajdeep Roy yesterday evening.

Meanwhile Indian Army lunched Gunners launch BAUT (Assault Boat) based medical aid camp to provide medical assistance to needy flood affected people in Malinibeel, Silchar on 27 June. According to Army sources 80 individuals rendered assistance so far. Lt Gen R.C. Tiwari reviewed the progress of flood relief operations in Silchar on June 27.

The Central Water Commission (CWC) has declared informed the media today morning that the rivers namely Kopili (at Dharamtul, Nagaon); Brahmaputra (at Neamatighat, Jorhat); Beki (at Road Bridge, Barpeta) are flowing above danger level, Barak (at BP Ghat, Karimganj, at AP Ghat, Cachar) and Kushiyara (at Karimganj) are flowing above danger level.

Meanwhile, the districts of Bajali, Baksa, Barpeta, Cachar, Chirang, Darrang, Dhemaji, Dima-Hasao, Goalpara, Golaghat, Hailakandi, Kamrup, Kamrup (M), Karimganj, Lakhimpur, Majuli, Morigaon, Nagaon, Nalbari, Sonitpur, Tamulpur, Udalguri have also been by the ongoing floods.

“The Indian Army, Indian Air Force and other Security Forces are working round the clock in Rescue & Relief operations for flood-affected areas.”, reads a tweet by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) yesterday evening.
