A orientation workshop was organised on Child Friendly Constituency among the VCDC Members, school management committee members and NGOs of Tamulpur Constituency. The workshop was organised by Assam State Commission for Protection of Child Rights in collaboration with UNICEF Assam and Studio Nilima at AABSU Office Hall in Matanga Chowk, Tamulpur district on 12th June.
Shri Maharshi Goswami, Technical Consultant, ASCPCR, welcomed the dignitaries and participants of the workshop and gave a brief about the Suraksha Campaign- a joint campaign by ASCPCR and UNICEF Assam, launched in 2020 with a message to ‘ End Violence Against Children’.
Shri Ajoy Kumar Dutta, Member, ASCPCR, on his welcome address thanked the participants for their valuable time to attend the workshop. He spoke about the situation of children in Assam and issues of violence against children which needs a collective effort of the society to be tackled with.
Dr. Pilu Hazarika, Member, ASCPCR, spoke about the powers functions of the ASCPCR and reiterated the role of duty bearers in protection of child rights with a focus on highlighting key provisions of the alwa pertaining to protection of child rights.
Smt. Purvi Malhotra Communication Specialist, UNICEF Assam in her address before the participants spoke about the Suraksha Campaign’s objective to end violence against children. Children should be allowed to participate in matters related to their protection and welfare and that child centric matters be incorporated into the development agendas of the VCDC which will boost the voices of children whose rights must be protected by all means. She emphasized on creation of the Sishu Gram Sabhas which can be adopted by other constituencies as the message of a child friendly constituency gets disseminated in other constituencies of the state.
Shri Jolen Daimary, Hon’ble MLA, Tamulpur Constituency in his address spoke about the cases of rescued survivors of trafficking from Tamulpur and nearby other areas and pointed out that such problems from the region needs to be addressed with vigilance among the community so that traffickers, who are often known and trusted by the survivors refrain from doing so. He informed the audience that he will begin with organizing the sishu bal Sabhas in each VCDC in his constituency and urged the VCDC Members to convene the sishu bal Sabhas. He thanked the ASCPCR-UNICEF campaign for conducting the orientation workshop in Tamulpur. Ms Anandita Pathak, Research Associate, Studio Nilima in her speech mentioned about the difficulties faced while preparing a situational analysis of children’s issues in Baksa and Tamulpur due to lack of data of reporting of offences of violence against children. The workshop ended with a appeal by a minor girl survivor of trafficking who requested the participants to provide protection to children from the different forms of violence and abuse that children are subjected too everyday.
