As the largest component of Armed Forces, Indian Army plays a pivotal role in National Security. The Army’s selfless contribution in service to the nation has come at enormous price which is recognized and appreciated by one and all.
Army Day is celebrated to mark Lieutenant General K M Cariappa’s taking over as Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army in 1949 from General Francis Butcher, the last British Commander-in-Chief of India. The transfer of power from the British to India signifies an important moment in the Indian history. Army Day also honours soldiers who have continuously sacrificed their lives for the country.
The Indian Army is one of the most respected and professional military forces in the world. It has been proudly shouldering the responsibility of defending the borders and protecting its citizens, as well as providing aid and assistance during natural disasters and otherwise. On this day the Army reaffirms its commitment towards the Nation and assurance of peace and security.
On this memorable occasion, Lieutenant General Ram Chander Tiwari, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Command laid a wreath at Vijay Smarak, Fort William and paid homage to the bravehearts who made supreme sacrifice for the honour and protection of this country. Similar ceremonies were organised in all Military stations across the Eastern Theatre.
From the dangerous snowy heights of Siachen and Tawang(across the entire Himalayan region), to the unbearable scorching heat of the deserts of Rajasthan and the dense forests of Assam,Indian Army Officers and men are protecting the nation day and night tirelessly with undaunting courage and valour.
Ever since the dawn of Independence, they have so effectively and very ably, protected countrymen from intruders, terrorists and other external threats. Since 1947, India faced three major wars and a number of skirmishes along the LOC and the LAC.
To mark this occasion eight units were conferred with the Chief of the Army Staff Unit Citation and two units were conferred with Chief of the Army Staff Appreciation Certificate from Eastern Command. Further, 32 units were conferred with GOC-in-C, Eastern Command Appreciation Certificate. The poignant event avouched the commitment of the Army towards the Nation.
