The former Chief Minister of West Bengal and a veteran leader of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee passed away on Thursday at his residence in Kolkata at the age of 80.
He died around 8:20 am after his condition deteriorated early morning on Thursday.
He had been suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and had been hospitalized frequently due to respiratory problems.
Bhattacharjee was born in north Kolkata on March 1, 1944, to a family with a scholarly background.
Famous Bengali Poet Sukanta Bhattacharya was his father’s cousin
Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee was served as the Chief Minister of West Bengal from 2000 to 2011. He assumed office as the chief minister of West Bengal in 2000, succeeding party leader Jyoti Basu.
He is survived by his wife Meera and son Suchetan.
